Reference Library information

Special open days: Homecoming Day (May), Open Campus (July), Spring and Autumn Special Exhibitions (dates and exhibition details will be announced in this website "News" section and the Ochanomizu University Library website "What New" section.)
Open 10:00-17:00 (Doors close at 16:30)

Staff members are not permanently stationed except on special open days.
If you wish to visit the reference library please notify the below office at least two weeks in advance regarding the time and number of visitors.

A reference library staff member can provide explanations on the displayed materials on Thursday from Monday.
The reference library may not be able to accommodate every visitor desired date, due to factors such as exhibition transitions and university holidays.
Also, it may take some time for the reference library to respond to inquiries.

Purpose

History Museum Ochanomizu University possesses numerous valuable materials that cannot be disregarded when discussing Japan history of higher education for women; For example, the school song "Migakazuba," bestowed by Empress Shoken when the school opened in 1875. The renovated Historical Reference Library opened in March 2006 on the first floor of the Main Building, as a way to allow more people access to these materials.
The Historical Reference Library collects, saves, researches and exhibits various university materials, and offers support in a wide variety of education and research areas.

On the building and room names

learning western etiquette The "Main Building" that contains the Historical Reference Library was built in 1932 after the Great Kanto earthquake, as part of the school non-combustible reconstruction project. The entire Main Building, which includes the Kiindo (university auditorium), was renovated from September 2003 to September 2006, with the Kiindo facilities fund-raiser for the school 130th anniversary. The exterior was preserved, and parts of the interior structure were restored to the original state in this reconstruction project. It was designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in March 2008.
In the Historical Reference Library, Historical Reference Library 1, which faces the courtyard, was used for learning western etiquette. The stone fireplace that was used for classes has been kept in its original state. The Historical Reference Library facilities fund-raiser took place from October 2006 to September 2007 and collected a total of 17 million yen from mostly alumnae. Raised funds were used for the library maintenance, such as purchasing exhibition cases.

Ochanomizu University Historical Reference Room (Ouin Kaikan)

The Ochanomizu University Historical Reference Room was established in 1999, on the second floor of Ouin Kaikan of Ouinkai, the school alumni association. The Historical Reference Room exhibits and opens to the public the university valuable educational materials that date back to the Tokyo Women Normal School years.
